CURRENT EVENTS I

A study, done by Common Sense Media in March 2022, showed that children used media in 2021 more than ever. The usage of media is 17% higher in last two years, which is more than in the four past years together. Children between the age 8 – 12 are spending 5 hours and 33 minutes on media now, whereas before it was 4 hours and 44 minutes. And the children or rather teenagers in the age 13 – 18 spend 8 hours and 22 minutes with media, especially on their mobile phones. Of course, that it was highly influenced by the pandemic of Covid-19, but with no doubt it is terrifying. Mainly, the children of poorer families were affected by the increased use of media because they did not have more activities, which they can do. (Moyer, 2022)

Statistics show, that children spend most time on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. What impact it can have on them? Especially on Instagram and TikTok people posted only their best pictures or videos, which are usually modified with the help of various filters. This has impact especially on young girls, because they see on Instagram only models with perfect bodies and skin, and thus they want to look like them, because all of them seem so happy on Instagram. Then, young girls can suffer from anorexia or other eating disorders. At the same time, most of the models look different in reality, but their photos are always perfect, thanks in part to photoshop as well. Further, it is important to take in consideration, what children could do instead of spending the most of their free time on media. Most likely, they replace media with family time, reading, sleeping, or sport activities. 65% percent of teenagers watch TV every day, according to this survey. So, if teenagers are rather watching TV instead of for example, spending time outside with their friends, they are losing their communication abilities, which can seriously influence them in their future, because communication with people is very important for almost each job. (Moyer, 2022)

As statistics show that children and teenagers spend more and more time on the media, the consequences will be fatal and their parents should try to work with them. For example, they should explain to them the importance of privacy and that they should not share everything through the media. Then, parents should mainly talk to them, about everything, including the media, so that children understand what the impact may be on them. (Moyer, 2022)

  1. Hi Daniela! I am surprised that young children as 8 spend that much time on their phones or on social media. I did not expect these little kids to have the access to internet and have their own phones. However, I know a lot of parents of young children, even one year old, that give their little children phones or tablets in order to entertain them while they are eating in a restaurant for example. I think this is wrong and can cause an addiction even in little children like this. I think that this is not going to be solved due to the parents' responsibility for their own children and some of them will still continue to allow them technical devices for 5 hours per day.

  2. Hi,
This is a big problem nowadays I think, and I am happy that you covered it so well in your blog. The time of children being on social media and on electronic devices in general is getting higher with each generation – For example our parents didn’t have a chance to spend any time on social media, since it was not available back then, then me and my friends, when we were growing up, there were already some sort of social media and we used it, but I would say that way more less than children do now, it might also be that our parents were more strict than parents are now (Don’t want to make any conclusions, just my opinion). But overall I think that it is a big problem and children shouldn’t spend that much time on social media, and I was literally shocked by the increase that was mentioned in your post from last years. Great job!

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY I

A child psychologist Kate Eshleman, PsyD, talks about the dangers, which social media can bring to children, how we suppose to talk to children, how we should keep them safe, and how to explain, that they should not take everything much seriously on the social media.     The majority of social media are conditioned by an age limit, usually 13 years. But currently, 33% of children between the age 7 to 9 have at least one social media app, and 50% of children between the age 10 to 12 use at least one social media platform. Dr. Eshleman says: “Social media makes it easy to compare oneself to another,”  (Pediatrics, 2021)  the she continues with: “most people put on social media what they want to see. And by using social media, all of us have the ability to access endless information anytime we want to and that can be very hard for kids.”  (Pediatrics, 2021)  With that being said, it is obvious, that to orient in the field of media is very hard for child...

OTHER ISSUES IN MEDIA AND SOCIETY

Eliška Dybova – The View of Women and Girls in the Media    Visit the blog here:  https://edybovaunypviewofwomen.blogspot.com   I would recommend you this blog, because you find so many underestimated issues here, which are not portrayed in media that much. For example, the content about missing women in Mexico is not emphasized enough in media. And Eliška tried to inform the society about issues related to women and how they are portrayed in media. Further, the image of women showed in media can influenced their well-being. We can see only models and their ideal, perfect bodies in the media and thus, girls then doubt about their bodies and lose confidence. So, if you are interested in the way, how women are shown in media and what impact it can have on them, you should definitely visit Eliška’s blog, because you can find many useful information here.    Lia Roubinkova – Media and Body Image    Visit the blog here:    https://effe...
